L’EIREST Interdisciplinary Research Team on Tourism (EA 7337)

In 2008, the founding of EIREST was motivated by the desire to create the conditions for interdisciplinary research on tourism, seen as a complex scientific object. Although other initiatives had previously existed in France (GDR tourisme, etc.) and now exist in a number of other countries, it had been observed that there was a lack of structured research facilities enabling multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary dialogue on tourism.

The prefiguration of the EIREST took place in September 2008, within the Institut de Recherche et d’Enseignement Supérieur du Tourisme (IREST) of the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, an institute that had no research team until then.

CUMET will also benefit from the great expertise of the Institut Paris Region (https://www.institutparisregion.fr/). The Institut Paris Région will contribute to the Paris case study (framing of peripheral heritage in Ile-de-France; framing of the territorial dynamics of industrial wastelands and urban transformation operations in the peripheries of Ile-de-France; framing of territorial dynamics in Saint-Denis/Saint-Ouen; support on the governance, institutional and legislative framework of heritage). It will also play an important role on the construction of the Observatory [mapping of heritage in Ile-de-France, urban wastelands, identification of transitional urbanism/culture projects, industrial urban fabrics and popular housing; supporting the setting up of the observatory (tools, format)]. It will also play a major role in the communication and dissemination (through its publications: “Note rapide” (which has a wide distribution to elected officials and main actors of the development in Ile-de-France); Dissemination on social networks and to international city networks (Metropolis, ICLEI, C40, UN- Habitat, WCCF, MTPA); the organisation of events: UN-Habitat World Urban Campaign urban campus, World Urban Forum 2024 (Cairo), World Cities Culture Forum annual conference…).

The Conseil Départemental de Seine Saint-Denis and more precisely the Inventory Service which has implemented since more than 20 years, the Architecture and Heritage Atlas. For thirty years, the Département has been pursuing a very active policy in the fields of knowledge, preservation and promotion of heritage. Archaeological, architectural, landscape, movable, memorial or intangible, heritage is our common asset and the basis of our shared history. More recently, it has also become a key element in regional planning. It encourages citizens to take ownership of the places where they live, work or study…

Plaine Commune (an intercommunity of 9 municipalities, including Saint-Denis, Saint-Ouen and Aubervilliers, which are the main research areas).

With 48,000 inhabitants, the City of La Courneuve has an ambitious heritage policy, to protect and valorize its archives, its artistic and ethnographic collections as well as in the support of urban projects concerned with the material and immaterial traces of its history.

AMuLoP, the Association which works on the prefiguration of a museum of popular housing in Saint-Denis. AMuLoP, Association pour un musée du logement populaire du Grand Paris (Association for a museum of popular housing in Greater Paris), brings together a group of secondary and higher education teachers, historians and sociologists, as well as cultural and heritage players, to support the long-term project for a museum of popular housing.

MADRID

In Madrid, the Municipal Board of the district of Usera is the body dependent on the City Council of Madrid that, a few years ago, promoted the enhancement of Chinese living culture as the backbone of the “modernization” of the neighborhood (in its artistic, cultural, gastronomic and touristic dimensions). As a partner of the project, the Usera Municipal Board will help build a framework with the district’s stakeholders that allows identifying the district’s heritage assets and understanding the processes of heritage co-creation (heritagization). The Municipal Board is responsible for the Usera Tourism Sustainability Plan, which is based on the enhancement of the culture and heritage of the Chinese community that lives in this neighborhood.

The Asociación Instituto Mujeres y Cooperación (Women’s Institute and Cooperation Association) leads the Gender Equality Space in the Villaverde district (Madrid, Spain). It is in charge of a public service specialized in promoting equality through awareness-raising and developing projects to recover the historical memory of the neighborhood. The Gender Equality Space has worked on themes of heritage appreciation and creation of neighborhood memory. The role of this partner is to introduce the project to the resident community of the Villaverde neighborhood and collaborate in the heritage recognition processes that allow studying the role that heritage plays in the dynamics of valorization of urban/metropolitan peripheries.

The National Galleries of Scotland are three Edinburgh galleries – National, Modern and Portrait. They house and look after Scotland’s amazing world-class art collection – one of the finest in the world. And, as you’d expect, the world’s greatest collection of Scottish art, our national collection.  They also have an outstanding collection of Western art from the late Middle Ages to the present day.

As well as displaying our art at our three Edinburgh sites, they also share it through an active programme of partnership across Scotland, the rest of the UK and abroad, as well as online.
